Rector Charaf Hassan presented the plans for the development of BME to the ambassadors of the EELISA cooperation member countries.
The German, Romanian, Swiss and Turkish ambassadors, the Head of the European Commission’s Representation in Budapest and the representatives of the French, Italian and Spanish embassies attended the meeting.

Dale A. Martin, president of EELISA welcomed the guests. Charaf Hassan rector pointed out that higher education is facing fundamental challenges. Limited governmental funding and the infrastructure needing significant upgrading require universities to look for new operating models. During the meeting, Charaf Hassan stressed that BME will continue to operate in a model where the Senate is the leading academic decision-maker, and freedom of research is guaranteed. The ambassadors expressed interest in the details of the renewal process, including its impact on the organisation, funding and international relations of the University.

“Funding from Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe is a major factor for the University, which has been the most successful Hungarian applicant in the previous and current funding periods. Therefore, we have developed an operational framework that will enable us to continue succeeding in the EU’s Horizon and Erasmus programmes,” the Rector highlighted.

The European Engineering Learning Innovation and Science Alliance (EELISA) is an essential partnership for BME and the Hungarian higher education ecosystem. This consortium of ten higher education institutions from eight countries (France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, and Turkey) aims to implement a common model of European engineering education.
The BME Senate voted decisively on December 9 to adopt a proposal by Rector Hassan Charaf and Chancellor Miklós Verseghi-Nagy to initiate a change in the university’s operating framework. The plan involves transferring maintainer rights to a business entity, allowing the university to tailor the framework to its unique needs.
